Lynemouth Power Station, Northumberland
Value - £45m | Client - Sir Robert McAlpine
We have provided civil design services on this scheme since 2011, originally supporting Fairport Engineering for the mechanical handling process delivery of biomass from the rail and road supply though storage silos to the existing power station mills.
In January 2016 the power station in Northumberland was given the go ahead from the Government to be the first power station in the UK to cease coal burning and convert to full biomass supply.
One of the largest civil engineering developments ever to be undertaken in the UK, the total project value is circa £300m with the civil works at £35m.
The Lynemouth biomass power plant is estimated to consume approximately 1.4 million tonne (Mt) of wooden pellets a year.
The pellets are imported primarily from the US and Canada and shipped to the UK by sea. They are received at the new biomass import terminal at the Port of Tyne in Newcastle. The plant is able to generate around 2.3 TWH of energy a year, enough to power around 700,000 homes.
The scheme establishes Lynemouth Power Station as a flagship site for the renewable energy sector.
