Ridgewood School, Doncaster

Client - NetZero Buildings

A new two-storey modular school building featuring innovative SIP construction methodology.

We were appointed to provide multi-discipline engineering services for a new two-storey structure at the Ridgewood School in Doncaster.

NetZero Buildings provide structurally insulated panel (SIP) construction options for schools, offering flexible construction timeframes and superior thermal properties in contrast to traditional brick and block structures.

To develop the structural performance required, we developed a braced single storey steel frame to provide rigidity to the ground floor with SIP infill panels. The first-floor SIP construction then sits on top of the braced frame, this reduces the quantity of steel, both saving the client money and providing better environmental credentials.

We used Tekla Structural Designer software to develop the design, which allowed us to generate a three-dimensional, non-linear steel frame model that could then account for secondary loadings and effects on the structure. This allowed the Clancy team to develop an efficient steel frame that reduces material waste and the environmental impact of the structure in line with the client’s design ethos.

The drainage strategy we proposed for the surface water was to attenuate the flow from the structure via an offline geocellular storage tank and flow control device. This reduced the flow to 5l/s to minimise the risk of downstream flooding and blockages in the system. Due to the shallow existing foul drainage infrastructure surrounding the new structure, we proposed a pumped system along with diversion of an existing rising main to best utilise existing infrastructure. The proposed structure was required to bridge two pieces of existing infrastructure; an existing fibre optic cable and 375m diameter surface pipe. To bridge these items, a reinforced opening into the foundations was created.

Testimonial:

“We have been engaged by Net Zero Buildings to provide civil, structural and MEP Engineering services on a number of modular schools and residential schemes across the UK.

This project stands out because of the environmental impact of the structure thanks to the innovative SIP construction methodology, offering swift delivery of the project at an affordable cost.”
