Enhancements to facilities ahead of The Open.
Founded in 1878, Royal Troon Golf Club on the Ayrshire Coast will host the 152nd Open in 2024, its tenth time.
Having enjoyed a longstanding relationship with the club, we have recently been engaged to provide civil and structural engineering design services to upgrade the greenkeeper and practice facilities. Our work ensures the club continues to meet the standards required for its members and to host major golfing events.
Recent schemes have included design work associated with the alterations and extensions to the greenkeepers' compound and workshops, the construction of a new staff welfare facility and car park, and a new covered practice driving bay building.
To support the club’s greenkeeping staff all year round and the influx of additional greenkeepers required during major events, we have designed new offices, drying rooms, changing rooms, shower facilities, staff rooms, meeting rooms, and lounge areas to cater to their welfare needs.
Much of the new work has been carried out in an area congested with underground services, including those servicing the spectator village for The Open. We conducted a thorough assessment of these existing services to inform our design, leading to the need for some new building foundations to be offset or designed to straddle these services.
In addition to the structural design of ancillary and support buildings, we undertook detailed design work for roads, car parking, and sustainable drainage solutions. Surface water is naturally dispersed through swales and soakaways, while a new pumping station with a rising main to the existing public sewer manages foul sewerage. We also diverted an existing underground culvert and constructed a new flow control chamber to facilitate water extraction by pumps to an adjacent irrigation tank. This required close coordination with the course manager to meet the club’s operational needs.
Testimonial:
“The club has undertaken a number of major projects over recent years that have required the input of a number of expert advisers. We have been working with Clancy who has provided the structural and civil engineering input that has enabled us to undertake and complete these projects to a very high standard and will continue to work with them on the further phases that are to come.”
