BMI Ross Hall Hospital, Glasgow

Value - £5m | Client - Circle Health Group, Morris & Spottiswood

Upgrading and extension works to a part three, part four storey hospital building constructed in the 1980s as an extension to the earlier Grade B Listed building.

We have been engaged on several schemes at the hospital campus, including forming a new x-ray facility, stone repairs to parts of the listed building, and re-cladding works and extension of the 1980s building to provide additional enlarged operating theatres and a more prominent entrance.

The 1980s building was found to be suffering from multiple issues associated with the external envelope. Windows were leaking and the cladding was found to incorporate combustible insulation and did not incorporate cavity fire barriers appropriate to present day legislation.

Our services included structural inspection and assessment of the existing building regarding its ability to support a new cladding system. We also designed the secondary support structure and all structural aspects of the extended new entrance and operating theatre. The existing building incorporates a basement with a link corridor to the original stone building. We undertook extensive investigations of the existing services and underground drainage to ensure our foundation and drainage proposals accounted for these constraints. This was particularly important to minimise site delays as the buildings were in use during the works. The construction work was phased to suit the client’s operational requirements.

The teams hard work and close collaboration was positively received by the hospital stakeholders. The changes provide a much improved visual appearance to the overall facility. The new entrance was designed to create a prominent reception, blending with the site's characteristics and respecting the original B Listed main sandstone building. The changes to the extension have greatly improved the Uvalues and promote natural ventilation within the bedrooms.

The project was recently shortlisted for the Best Private Healthcare Development award at the Building Better Healthcare Awards 2024.
